This was my photo. I was in the same school class as Deborah Woodman's brother Tim and went to birthday parties in their house in Somerset Road. Valerie Pink is in the photo-- still in touch with her, also member of the DeLittle Family whose parents are in this picture; all of Meadvale. Little girl out-front lived in Copse Road.

The chapel was beautiful. My cubicle was right next to the hall which communicated our cubicles with the choir’s chapel. I suppose in another era, boarders could go down to mass from the cubicles. I loved to go the chapel and just pray, through that door, without being caught by sister Bernard.

Apologies. Reverend Mother was Bernard. Sister Pascal took care and slept on the third floor with all the boarders. She would draw the curtain without any notice. Just to check and see you were busy. Sister Jerome would do the same. One time I had a nasty cold. And one of the boarders brought me a tray with food. I was very hungry. As I am eating dinner, all of a sudden, I hear footsteps and the curtain is being drawn sharply. Says sister Jerome: you are not ill at all, if you are eating. Tomorrow, down to class!

I bordered from 1965-1967. It looks quite the same. Except there was a wall in between cubicles. For more privacy, a sink, wardrobe, chest of drawers, night table.

Anthony ( Tony ) Wiggins from Benimeli, Spain posted this comment on Sunday 19 March 2023 14:03:58.

I was most interested to come across this article. I have very fond memories of this little school. I was there from 1950 to 1956 and remember both Josephine Watson and Gillian Mann. The name Vanessa Chappell also rings a faint bell. I would be interested to find out the surname of Christine Iqbal when she was there as I remember a Christine but that was not the surname ( possibly Wheeler ). Thanks to Colin in his message reminding me of Mrs. Manders who I seem too remember was very nice . If anybody would like to contact me I would be most interested to hear from them to discover what their lives held for them after leaving the North Bank School. I left and went on to Oxted County Grammar School and married the girl I travelled with every day on the bus from Reigate to Oxted. Still married after meeting at the tender age of 11 and happily living out retirement in Spain.

I used to attend Holmesdale School in Holmesdale Road. I lived in Warren Road which runs down to what we called 'Spurgeons'. In about 1948 our school was scheduled to be redecorated. It was decided to minimise disruption to the school that our class would be relocated for the period of the redecoration to the sports pavilion shown in this photograph. I remember it was rather cold and each day we had to walk from school to this pavilion and back.

Does anyone know where I could find photos of the damage from a bomb that fell on the 5th of January 1944? My grandparents lived in the house with my mother and aunt who were children at the time. I have some letters written by my Granny the day after the house came down and I would be very interested in seeing photos taken at the time. Thank you.

I attended North Bank School and remember Miss Raynor and Mrs Mander. I recall that every morning we had to parade around the hall whilst Miss |Raynor played boring piano - so I organised a pupil collection and went with two shillings to the music shop Rhythms, and returned with some more 'uplifting' music (perhaps Blaze Away) - it brightened the beginning of the day! It was my first rebellious act of protest - many more followed in adult life.

Hello Richard Hooper - so lovely to hear from you about my great-aunt Sylvia Lloyd's school! though of course she'd long retired when you were there. So the school was demolished in the early 1970s - a shame, but understandable as the grounds were needed for housing. Many thanks for posting!

I've only just come across this website so sorry for the five-year wait, Peter! We were teammates in the RSM football team (I played at left back) and was the scorer for the cricket team. I have photos of those teams and of the end-of-year photos. I could scan the team photos but not the school photos - too wide!

Laura Crawford from Bradford posted this comment on Thursday 15 September 2022 09:03:19.

My mother and grandmother were evacuated from Eastbourne to Redhill and she was very emotional when she saw it. In the background of the photo is a terrace of four badly damaged houses, it was in one of these my mother lived - she could even identify her bedroom. She has tried to find/purchase a copy of the photograph but with no success and has given up. Any assistance in how I might be able to purchase a copy of the photograph for my Mum would be much appreciated. She is still terrified during thunderstorms as it reminds her of the explosion.

My parents and I lived here, in a first floor flat, in the early 1960s. I remember walking up the garden and going through a small gate to get onto the hill. There was a fire escape from my bedroom window into the garden below, and a rubbish shute from our bathroom into the bins in the basement, which I thought was fascinating!

I swam many many miles in this pool to get all the badges. Mr Stringle was the teacher. It did not have the wooden cublicles then, there were changing rooms off to each side. You had a box made of hardboard to store your clothes and there was a booth where you handed the box over which was in place of the white wood panel in the centre of this picture.
